Ipsos/Reuters Poll: Gun Regulations

Washington, D.C. - Our poll on attitudes towards gun regulations shows majority support for at least moderate regulations (62%). About one in six Americans also indicate that they are currently in the market for a gun.
On specific aspects of regulation, we find high levels of support for gun ownership but also for regulations around ownership and access. Data below is from Q4 in the attached document, which was added to the survey around the time of Obama’s recent announcements on the subject:
- More than three-quarters of Americans support expanding background checks to include sales at gun shows and between private parties (86%), banning people with a history of mental illness from buying guns (91%), and tracking gun sales through a federal database (81%)
- A majority of Americans also support banning military-style assault weapons (74%), high-capacity ammunition clips (74%), online sales of ammunition (69%), and semi-automatic weapons (66%).
- However, a majority of Americans also favor public funding for gun classes for teachers and school personnel (59%), allowing school personnel to carry guns (55%), placing armed guards in schools (72%) - and half (50%) favor encouraging school personnel to carry guns.
