Political Polling in Kentucky: Wave 1

Washington, DC- Ipsos' most recent poll for Reuters was carried out in Kentucky and published yesterday. The data shows Senate candidate Rand Paul leading by 5 points over his opponent Jack Conway.

Governor Steve Beshear's ratings are on balance positive, with a 52% approval rating among registered voters in Kentucky. Senator Mitch McConnell also enjoys a positive rating (50% approve / 45% disapprove), although President Barack Obama's ratings are on balance negative (44% approve / 55% disapprove).

The poll also contained questions on Rand Paul specifically, and voter awareness of the alleged incidents that occurred while Paul was at Baylor University. Awareness of these stories is moderate, with 46% of Kentucky registered voters having heard of them. Of those who have heard about the stories, more than half (57%) think they are exaggerated or fabricated while over a quarter (28%) think them true or mostly true. The vast majority (71%) of those who have heard the stories say it will have no impact on the way they vote.
