Calgary, AB – On the eve of the 94th Calgary Exhibition & Stampede, a new Ipsos Reid/Calgary Herald poll finds that Albertans still look forward to the event every year and see the ten day festival as a relevant event that improves Calgarians’ quality of life.

With nearly nine-in-ten (86%) agreeing that the Stampede has a positive impact on the quality of life in Calgary, findings show that the majority don’t see the Stampede simply as a ten-day party but as one of the region’s most important cultural events. Moreover, almost three-quarters (73%) of Albertans said that they look forward to the Stampede every year.

These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll fielded between May 17 -21, 2006 and is based on a randomly selected sample of 802 adult Albertans. Results based on a sample size of 802 are considered accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult Albertan population been polled. These data were statistically weighted to ensure the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Alberta population according to the 2001 Census data.

The Calgary Stampede has been entertaining Albertans and hosting Canada and the world since 1912, and now on the eve of its 94th anniversary, a new Ipsos Reid/Calgary Herald poll finds that Calgarians and Albertans still see the ten day festival as a vital cultural event that enriches Calgarians’ overall quality of life. When asked whether or not they thought that the Calgary Stampede has a positive and relevant impact on the quality of life in Calgary, more than eight-in-ten (86%) agreed.

  • Those more likely to agree that the Calgary Stampede “has a positive impact on the quality of life in Calgary” include Albertans with some postsecondary education (91%) as compared to those who graduated university (82%).

Most (73%) look forward to the Stampede every year

As an annual event that draws crowds and attracts tourist dollars from across the country and around the world, it is no surprise that many Albertans look forward to the Stampede every year. When asked, almost three-quarters (73%) of Albertans agreed that they look forward to the Calgary Stampede each year, with slightly more than four-in-ten (42%) strongly agreeing that they look forward to it.

  • Those more likely to agree that “they look forward to the Calgary Stampede every year” include Albertans between the ages of 18-34 (82%) compared to those between the ages of 35 – 54 (71%) and 55 years and older (63%), and Albertans with some postsecondary education (80%) compared to university graduates (64%).
