Canadians (53%) Tell MPs To Vote In Favour Of Throne Speech In Order To Avoid Election

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

Ottawa, ON – When Governor-General Michaelle Jean lays out the minority Conservative governments Speech from the Throne on the evening of Tuesday, October 15, 2007, there is a line that will not appear in the text; but if Canadians could write it, it would be as follows: don't defeat the Throne Speech when the government brings it to Parliament for a vote because there is nothing in it worth defeating the government over and forcing or causing an election. Further, if the Throne Speech is defeated and causes an election, it is the Opposition, and not the government who will wear the blame.

In what promises to be a critical debate in defining the platforms and ideas of parties, Tory’s Progressive Conservatives at 37% support remain in close striking distance of McGuinty’s Liberals who lead at 40% support. However, with the Liberals still in the lead, it appears as though the Liberals are in reach, but just out of grasp of trailing Tories. The NDP under Howard Hampton are holding steady at 16% support, while the Green Party is standing pat at 6% support. Nine percent of voters remain undecided.

While support for the PCs was maintaining close proximity to levels of support for the governing Liberals since May, the Liberals have now widened the gap to a lead of 7 points.

Running Fast But Standing Still: After 18 Months Of Governing, Conservatives Make No Progress On The Public Opinion Front

Thursday, August 02, 2007

Toronto, ON – Despite controlling the government benches and federal agenda for the past 18 months, Stephen Harper’s Conservative government has failed to improve its support among the electorate. A new Ipsos Reid poll finds that the Conservatives, at 34% support nationally, are down slightly from the results of the General Election in January of 2006 (36%), and have continued to hover around that level of support since taking office a year and a half ago. As the federal Conservative caucus meets in Charlottetown this week to reflect on the past 18 months and to plan the government’s agenda for the fall session of parliament, some Tories may be scratching their heads to figure out what they have to do to pull away from the Liberal Party that follows closely at 32% support nationally. With Harper’s government still some distance away from majority territory—which typically requires a minimum of 40% support across the country—it appears that Canadians might have to brace for many more sessions of minority government politics.

However, a new Ipsos Reid poll conducted exclusively for CanWest News Service and Global Television finds that a majority of Canadians (58%) agree that ‘Prime Minister Harper was right in making this appointment, because a non-police officer will see things in a fresh light and bring greater accountability and good management practices to the force, regardless of the internal RCMP support he gets.’

While this might suggest that some tension exists among the multitude of ethnic groups that make up the diverse ethnic culture of Canada and those who were born here, fewer Canadians are of this opinion now than they were in the past. A similar study in 1993 revealed that seven in ten (70%) Canadians agreed that discrimination of minorities in Canada was a problem, while six in ten (60%) in 1998 agreed with that sentiment and 54% currently agree, showing a steady decline over the last 14 years.
